Steve Chartan

Steve Chartan is an experienced strategist with 12 years of service in Congress.

 

From 2015 to 2023, he served in Senator Ted Cruz’s office, rising to chief of staff in 2019. Steve secured the enactment of dozens of legislative measures, including legislation to expand education freedom, provide critical Hurricane Harvey relief, and reauthorize NASA. He also managed Senator Cruz’s transition to the Ranking Member role on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Before becoming chief of staff, Steve served as Senator Cruz’s deputy chief of staff and legislative director.

 

Prior to his tenure with Senator Cruz, Steve served as the founding executive director of the House Freedom Caucus under Chairman Jim Jordan. As the organization’s top advisor, he played an early role in shaping its structure and operations. He guided the organization through numerous high-profile debates and successfully positioned it as an influential group in Congress. 

 

Steve also served as policy advisor on the Senate Steering Committee for two chairmen — Senator Pat Toomey and Senator Mike Lee. He started in Congress as a legislative staff member for Senator Toomey.

 

Steve graduated from Duke University. He lives in Maryland with his wife, their two young daughters, and their dog.
